In Costa Rica lies a mystery thats still unanswered today. Archeologist found stone spheres, hundreds of them. They were all different sizes but they had one thing in common. They were perfectly round. That means that in every single point of the sphere, the diameter is exactly the same.
Eventho a lot of the balls were destroyed in the colonization period, a lot also survived. Many are in use by the locals to decorate their gardens. Still, researchers are baffled by the craftmanship. Most of the balls have a smooth surface, that is appearantly obtained by a long time of pollishing with a tremendous eye for detail.
A super natural eye for detail... or a computer.
What makes it even more mysterious, is that nobody claims to be the maker of it. None of the indian tribes do, and it appears that nobody points at their ancestors as responsible.
Researchers specualted what the spheres were for. Some groups said the balls had an astrological meaning and that they represented the planets. It was believed that the indians on Costa Rica were a Maya-like culture. The Mayans revered the planets as holy. But the Mayans portrayed the planets as discs and not as spheres. This radically changed the view on the native inhabitants of Costa Rica. They were not a Maya-like culture, but perhaps a culture on its own.
Other researchers claimed it to be an offering. To show the gods their determination and patience to craft a perfectly round ball. But then again, wouldnt there be some traces of such an obvious tradition? Wouldn't there be local indians who still do that or atleased knew about it?
In the end, it is what it remains... A mystery...
